Press room - News - Implementation of global system for safety, quality and environmental management in all of the production centers

Over 120 of the company’s Civil Explosives, Outdoors, Defence and Chem facilities in more than 40 countries around the world. The initiative follows the standards established by OHSAS 18001 (Risk Assessment), ISO 9001 (Quality Control) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).

MAXAM
has launched a project by which the company shall extend its global management system for safety, quality and environmental management to all of its facilities. These standards are key components of MAXAM’s corporate policy, and the foundations upon which the company bases its activity and sustainable management worldwide.

The initiative, which was enacted towards the end of 2011, is being implemented in the more than 120 production centers that MAXAM operates in over 40 countries and across five continents. The project, which will continue until 2014, will involve the Civil Explosives (blasting products and services for mining, quarrying and infrastructure), Outdoors (cartridges, shotgun shells and smokeless powder for hunting and sports use), Defence (products and services related to the defence and security industry) and Chem (nitro chemical development) areas of the company.

One of the objectives of this global, integrated triple-tiered initiative is to take full advantage of the synergies that exist between these individual sets of standards and minimize the time it takes to execute this process by way of combining the implementation three measures in each production center. The ambitious measure allows for a transversal homogenization of these aspects –Safety, Quality and Environmental Management– in MAXAM’s global network.

Systems of global management
These three management systems involve specific patterns of action, as well as qualitative and quantitative measurement indicators that help assess and coordinate the company’s overall performance in these areas.

In environmental matters, and in accordance with ISO 14001, the Environmental Management System determines the basis for the control and minimization of waste and emissions according to the “3-R’s” principle (Reduce-Ruse-Recycle).

The ISO 9001 Quality standard requires process management to optimize resources with the ultimate goal of providing increased customer satisfaction by accessing the most complete range of products used by MAXAM to help you achieve greater productivity.

With regards to Safety (OHSAS 18001), the ultimate goal is to equip all of MAXAM’s production centers with a homogenous tool that establishes, in the most efficient manner possible, mechanisms for continuous improvement in processes and working practices in order to achieve the established standards of excellence and the safety of all of our customers and employees.

After the implementation of this initiative, the management systems will be certified in accordance with a tiered schedule.

Global participation
“This is a challenge that demands the full participation of all of MAXAM’s workforce, and which has, as its objective, a new realm of homogenous activity for the company at a global level, with the ultimate goal of offering our clients the best possible service, regardless of where they are or what MAXAM product they require”, explains José Fernando Sánchez-Junco, Chairman of MAXAM.

“This effort will give an added value to our products, something which is firmly in line with our greater long-term aspirations, as well as those of our clients and, ultimately, society at large”.
