The inauguration of the monument in remembrance of the Spaniards who died in the Gulag complex of Karaganda, known as the Karlag, between 1941 and 1954, was held at the Spassk camp on 31 May 2015 at 11:00 hours.
The Spanish Ambassador in Astana, Mr Manuel Larrotcha, and relatives of the Spanish citizens who were confined in the Karlag attended the inauguration ceremony. After the ceremony, there was a meeting with the Director General of the National Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Marat Apsemetov, and a visit to the ‘Museum of the Victims of Political Repression in the Village of Dolinka’.
The monument was built in the autumn of 2014 at the initiative of the Spanish Embassy in Astana, with the support of the Karaganda City Council and the cooperation and financial support of MAXAM, among other companies.
