Press room - News - MAXAM, an example of the internationalization of Spanish businesses
In 20 years it has transitioned from being a national company to generating 90% of its 1000 M€ in sales within the global market, as was the case during the past fiscal period.
It has production facilities in 45 countries and sells its products in over 100 countries spread across five continents.
It is the world’s second leading company in blasting products and services for the mining, quarrying and construction sectors.
The Círculo de Empresarios (Spanish Association of Entrepreneurs) and the Wharton School of Business have recognized the international growth and consolidation strategy developed by MAXAM during the last 20 years.
In 1992 MAXAM was UEE, a subsidiary of the recently created ERCROS, with 100% of its sales in Spain. In only two decades, and after establishing itself as an independent enterprise, it has turned into a truly global company. Today, it has production facilities in 45 countries spread across five continents, and it sells its products in over 100 countries around the world.
In 2006 UEE changes its corporate image and identity, turning into MAXAM, a company with leadership positions in all of the activities and markets in which it is present:
· The world’s second largest company in blasting products and services for the mining, quarrying and construction sectors (MAXAM Civil Explosives).
· The world’s leading producer of cartridges (over 500 million annually), as well as sport shooting and hunting powders (MAXAM Outdoors).
· The leading Spanish defence group, and the European leader in the field of demilitarization (MAXAM Defence).
· A powerful producer of key raw materials for nitrochemical activity, especially Ammonium Nitrate and Nitrocellulose (MAXAM Chem).
· Developer of an innovative project in the field of renewable energies based on in-house production (MAXAM Energy).
MAXAM’s international strategy and development is based upon:
· In-house technological development and capacity that allows it to operate onsite within its clients’ installations.
· Its production structure’s vertical integration and global logistical network.
· Corporate Policies that define homogeneous management principles in its key areas of activity (Health and Safety, Environment, Quality, Security and Technology, amongst others).
Strategy for the future
MAXAM’s strategy for the future is based on the company’s establishment, growth and consolidation wherever its clients are doing the same.
As such, MAXAM Civil Explosives anticipates growing wherever the mining sector might. Mainly, South America, Central Asia, and most of Africa. Geographic areas in which, moreover, major infrastructure projects are currently underway.
During the last few months MAXAM Civil Explosives has begun to work as the unique provider of blasting products and services to one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines (Oyu Tolgoi, Mongolia), and it has launched a new production line of Ammonium Nitrate in Uzbekistan, as well as initiated the construction of an initiation systems factory in China.
In the field of sports shooting cartridges, some of the brands manufactured by MAXAM Outdoors were chosen by sportspeople competing in the 16 Olympic shooting events held during the 2012 London Olympic Games.
EXPAL, head of MAXAM’s Defence Business Unit, generates 90% of its sales outside of Spain, to Defence Ministries and armed forces in over 40 countries. Recently, it has begun operations in the United States, launched a demilitarization line in Brazil, and opened a commercial representation office in Malaysia.
