Press room - News - MAXAM and Oyu Tolgoi celebrate one million tons of rock moved in one blast

The milestone was achieved last December 3rd. The first blast was completed on September 17th 2011, since then, more than 8 million tons have been moved.

MAXAM is a supplier of products and blasting services for the large open-pit and underground Oyu Tolgoi mining operation in Mongolia.

Oyu Tolgoi, the gold and copper mine under development in the South Gobi Desert, has just celebrated moving one million tonnes of earth in a blast as part of its development of the South Gobi Site. The achievement was possible thanks to MAXAM, which was formed in Mongolia in 2006.

MAXAM’s product, RIOFLEX watergel explosive, is manufactured at a plant on-site meeting demanding blasting and safety requirements while assuring security of supply.

Andrew Forster, MAXAM Mongolia General Manager, said: “It’s an honour for MAXAM to have a relationship with Oyu Tolgoi. MAXAM has expanded its reputation among the community and businesses in Mongolia thanks to its cooperation with Oyu Tolgoi – a company that is well known for its social responsibility and a high standard of business conduct”.

Cameron McRae, CEO of Oyu Tolgoi, thanked MAXAM for their support. “MAXAM has been a fantastic supplier for us and I know that they do a lot of great work in the community – particularly with the Mongolian Women’s Fund, New Choice and Alpha Communities helping Mongolian women and children”, he said.

MAXAM and Oyu Tolgoi: Educational, Social and Community Programs in Mongolia
As part of the agreement to provide products and services to Oyu Tolgoi, MAXAM Mongolia commited to implement a series of Educational, Social and Community Programs, started in September 2011 and planned to run until 2021.

MAXAM is committed to the development of its local content Policy by incorporating these programs into its business as part of its contribution to the sustainable development of Mongolia.

These programs will benefit local communities with: work related training for employees; increasing employment and the number of future national mining experts; providing infrastructure development and higher income thus an improved quality of life.

One of this is an exchange program between universities in Mongolia and the Politecnica de Madrid in Spain. Rio Tinto, the global miner that runs Oyu Tolgoi, is also deeply involved in supporting educational initiatives, and Oyu Tolgoi has established a graduate scholarship programme for 120 students at Mongolian universities and for 30 Mongolian students at international universities. “Oyu Tolgoi shares Maxam’s view that social responsibility must be at the centre of every corporate philosophy”, Cameron McRae, CEO of Oyu Tolgoi.
