Press room - News - MAXAM expands its educational, social and community programs in Mongolia
The company establishes a new partnership with the Veloo Foundation, which provides help and outreach to underprivileged children, and continues its collaboration with the Mongolian Women’s Fund, the New Choice Children Organization and Alpha Communities NGOs.
Building on the established tradition of collaboration with local communities established in 2011, MAXAM Mongolia has expanded its work with three prestigious NGO’s –and established ties with a fourth–. With this initiative the company strengthens its commitment with Oyu Tolgoi, within which MAXAM serves as the sole blasting products & services provider.
MAXAM has increased its support by signing a charter with the Veloo Foundation, with which the company will provide support for the Peak Children’s Sanctuary Project, which provides help and outreach to the children living in Ulan Bator’s rubbish dump.
Underscoring its continued commitment to Mongolia, and the progress of society as a whole, MAXAM has increased its donations to these programs, and this year will donate over 38,000 USD to these endeavors.
Educational outreach programs
MAXAM is firmly committed to nurturing the next generation of Mongolians, and in this sense puts significant weight on training and education efforts. Since 2011 –and with a projected extension of ten years–, the company has fostered programs that provide training related to the use of blasting products & services technologies, permitting them to increase employment and allowing for the creation of local mining experts.
Backed by the MAXAM Chair of Explosive Technology of the Higher School of Mining Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, MAXAM also funds scholarships for local university students. These are trained in MAXAM facilities at Oyu Tolgoi and have the option of ending their studies in Spain, and ultimately joining the MAXAM family. This and the recruiting of new professionals from the local populace is done via the YESS program, which offers university students and graduates with less than three years of work experience the opportunity of completing their studies and developing their professional career within an international work environment.
Social aid efforts
MAXAM works hand in hand with a number of organizations that play important parts in the improvement of the living conditions of the people with whom they work.
Throughout the country, the Mongolian Women’s Fund works to help local women, reinforcing their integration within a humane, democratic and civil society in which they can participate at the political, economic and cultural levels. Based in Ulan Bator, the New Choice Children Organization provides education, healthcare, homes and summer camps for the most underprivileged impoverished and orphaned Mongolian children. Also in Ulan Bator, the Alpha Communities Orphanage similarly assists in local initiatives and provides support for communities affected by poverty.
Community support
MAXAM participates in the active development of local infrastructure that will foster the creation of employment, and generally provide the opportunity for the improved quality of life in the area.Specific operations -construction projects centered on playgrounds and landscaping- are undertaken in Bagakhangai, where MAXAM has some of its facilities, and the South Gobi Region in general.
MAXAM has also organized short-term vocational training courses in the South Gobi Region to help unemployed, unqualified adults and school dropouts to acquire practical skills and tools thus help increase employment in the area.
MAXAM is a leading service and industrial group that operates on a global scale by developing, manufacturing and commercializing civil explosives and initiation systems for mining, quarries and infrastructures; cartridges, shotgun shells and smokeless powder for hunting and sports use; and products for the defense industry. Likewise, MAXAM is a supplier of key raw materials for nitro chemical activity, generated for the company’s own internal needs as well as for the commercialization to third parties. Finally, as a result of its drive towards innovative, sustainable development, MAXAM offers its clients a wide variety of solutions in the fields of safety and environmental conservation.
