EXPAL, head of MAXAM’s Defence business unit, has just received an important five year long demilitarization contract from the U.S Army valued at 156 M$
- The new hunting cartridge manufacturing facility, with a production capacity of a million cartridges per day and a surface area of 9.750 m2, will entail a total investment of 17 M€. The project has been supported by the Texas State authorities. The U.S is the largest sports and hunting cartridge market in the world with up to 20 million shooters1. Rio Ammunition, brand under which MAXAM Outdoors operates in the country, is one of the main manufactures of the U.S market.
- In Defence, EXPAL USA started working with the U.S Army in 2011 through R+D projects. It’s currently performing ammunition and explosives demilitarization activities, developing new energetics and conventional ammunition loading, assembling and packing. EXPAL USA has just received a five year long demilitarization contract from the U.S Army valued at 156 M$. EXPAL is the leading European demilitarization company due to its 3R technology (recovery, recycle and reuse). The U.S in the main defence market in the world with an estimated 4.000 M$ annual business figure.
- In the Civil Explosives business area, MAXAM has its headquarters located in Salt Lake City (Utah). Its main clients are mining companies (coal and metallic mining), together with quarry and construction companies. MAXAM Civil Explosives USA has more than 100 employees throughout its different production facilities located in Wyoming, Connecticut, New Jersey and West Virginia.
- The U.S represents 6% of MAXAM Group’s annual turnover, which in 2014 reached total sales of 1106 M€ with a 135 M€ EBITDA.
- Dovetailing with the inauguration, MAXAM Foundation organizes the “MAXAM Collection. Spanish painting since 1900” exhibition in Dallas (Latino Cultural Center, 23-30 June) and in Marshall (The Michelson Museum of Art, 9 July to 4 September), the first display of MAXAM’s painting collection in the U.S.
Today, in the presence of the State of Texas and the Government of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorities, Rio Ammunition has inaugurated its new sports and hunting cartridge manufacturing facility in the U.S.
This cutting-edge technology facility poses a total investment of 17 M€ between the construction of the building and technical equipment. This new plant has a production capacity of one million cartridges per day, all of them destined to the North-American market – the biggest one in the world with 20 million sport shooters in the U.S and 7.5 million in Canada, according to the World Federation of Sport Shooting Activities (WFSA).
MAXAM Outdoors began its activity in the U.S in 2001, at the time, all the cartridges that were sold in the U.S were exported from the factory that MAXAM Outdoors owns in Vitoria (Spain). The facility inaugurated today has a surface area of 9.750 m2 and employs 40 people.
“These facilities are just an example of one of MAXAM’s strengths, our technology, key to our competitive leadership in all our business units – Civil Explosives, Outdoors, Defence and Chem -, together with the quality of our products and services, quality that will from now on be delivered from Marshall to all U.S hunters and shooters”, stated José Fernando Sánchez-Junco, Chairman & CEO of MAXAM, during the inauguration ceremony.
MAXAM Outdoors is one of the world-wide leaders in this sector with over 500 million cartridges produced per year in different facilities located in Spain, U.S, U.K and Turkey and sales in more than 80 countries. In this business, MAXAM has a completely integrated production chain that includes both cartridge components (cases, primers, powder, wads and lead shot) and raw materials (nitrocellulose).
MAXAM Defence in the U.S
In the defence activity,
EXPAL USA was founded in 2011. Up until now, it has worked in R&D projects for the U.S Army (i.e nano-diamonds) and has just received a five year long demilitarization contract from the U.S Army valued at 156 M$ which will be carried out in its Texarkana facilities (State of Texas).
EXPAL is the leading demilitarization company in Europe (facilities in Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Denmark and Belarus) due to its 3R technology (recovery, recycle and reuse).
MAXAM Civil Explosives in the U.S
In the Civil Explosives business (blasting products and services for the mining, quarry and construction sectors),
MAXAM North America began its activity in the U.S in 2001 by acquiring Mining Services International, Salt Lake City (Utah).
North America is an important mining market in which
MAXAM has a solid position amongst the coal and metallic mining operations, together with quarry, construction and seismic (oil and gas operations).
Its headquarters are located in Salt Lake City (Utah) and it has production facilities in the states of Wyoming, Connecticut, West Virginia and New Jersey. All of them together employ more than 100 workers.
2014 results
Last 31st of March, MAXAM closed its financial year (1st of April 2014 – 31st of March 2015) with a total turnover of 1106 M€ and a 135 M€ EBITDA.
The Civil Explosives business unit represents 70% of total sales, Defence is 14% (products and services for armies of more than 30 countries), Outdoors makes 10% and Chem business unit makes up the remaining 6% (nitro-chemical industry products such as nitric acid, nitrocellulose and ammonium nitrate).
Divided by geographical areas, sales have been distributed in the following way: Europe 41%, North America 10%, South America 14%, Russia 4%, Africa 13%, Asia 12% and Oceania 6%.
In total, foreign markets contribute 90% of MAXAM’s turnover. Two decades back from now, practically 100% of its turnover came from its national market (Spain).
