Press room - News - MAXAM signs an agreement with Oyu Tolgoi to implement Educational, Social and Community Programs in Mongolia

These programs are part of the agreement already signed by both companies for the supply of blasting products and services in Oyu Tolgoi.

MAXAM Explosives LLC has been operating in Mongolia since 2006 and is committed to the development of its local content Policy by incorporating it into its business as part of its contribution to the sustainable development of Mongolia. Its Educational, Social and Community Programs, starting from September 2011, are planned to run for ten year duration until 2021.

MAXAM’s educational program
It aims to achieve the company’s mission and performance goals and overall efficiency and effectiveness of their service through continually enhancing the skill of their labor force by providing the best training possible. This program began over ten years ago, and currently nearly one hundred of these participants belong to MAXAM’s team of International experts.

The Educational program plans three seminars per year, two of which will be related to MAXAM’S field of work and the other will be given to the relevant authorities in the Mongolian government to give them an insight on the last developments in the explosive industry worldwide.

Within the scope of this program, MAXAM will put into action an educational exchange between universities in Mongolia and the Politécnica de Madrid in Spain. Two of MAXAM’s employees from Mongolia will go to Civil Explosives University in Madrid to ensure they have acquired the adequate training and skills.

Every summer, MAXAM, with the approval of Oyu Tolgoi, will hire two engineering students under MAXAM’s work experience program. MAXAM Mongolia is also planning to implement MAXAM Corporate Mobility program in which one employee who has been with MAXAM for 3 years will have the opportunity to have a six month work exchange at one of MAXAM’s overseas subsidiaries.

MAXAM’s social program
This program pursues its objective through two major programs- supporting charity and education to help ensure communities meet their social needs.

MAXAM’s scholarship program is now in progress to support the students majoring in Mining related fields. As a result, three students will receive Maxam scholarship for the academic year of 2011-2012.

MAXAM has also started working with the Mongolian Women’s Fund, New Choice and Alpha Communities in the effort to contribute to a sustainable development of the Mongolian women and to help vulnerable children from unprivileged families.

According to the National Trauma Orthopaedic Research Center, household related injuries among children and adolescents aged between 0-19 account for 21713 emergency department visits in 2010. This is 30.5% of total number of household accidents registered at the center in the same year. In effort to reduce this number and cultivate safety culture from early age MAXAM has initiated safety classes among school children starting this year. It will be in practice at South Gobi province and Bagakhangai district schools.

MAXAM’s community program
This program is aiming to improve the quality of life of the urban poor through a closer participation of the community as MAXAM reasonably believes it is necessary and desirable. There will be a demand and needs study which will be conducted among street residents of Bagakhangai, where MAXAM has its magazines, to build MAXAM-OT model Street with a playground, grassing and flowerbeds. The project will be implemented in April-May 2012.

Within the scope of this project MAXAM will organize short-term vocational training courses in South Gobi Region from March 2012 to help unemployed, unqualified adults and school dropouts to acquire practical skills and tools thus help increase employment/self employment in the area.

Global results
MAXAM believes these programs will benefit local communities with:
  • Work related training for employees
  • Increasing the number of future national mining experts
  • Increasing the number of employment
  • Higher income thus improved quality of life
  • Infrastructure development
MAXAM is seeing this as an investment in Mongolian people and appreciates Oyu Tolgoi LLC’s support towards these programs.
