Press room - News - MAXAM upgrades its Corporate Environmental Policy
The company strengthens its past pledges and extends them within the framework of its global field of action.
A global commitment to the Responsible Care Global Charter and the United Nations Global Pact.
In its quest to always evolve in order to meet the new demands posed by an ever expanding market,
MAXAM has updated its Corporate Environmental Policy to better reflect the new environmental commitments that the company has undertaken in recent years.
This latest Environmental Policy reflects
MAXAM’s adhesion to the International Council of Chemical Associations’ Responsible Care Global Charter –signed in 2006– and the United Nations Global Compact –signed in 2010–. Two voluntary and relevant international initiatives which symbolize MAXAM’s commitment to sustainable development. The current Policy commitment strengthens that of July 2006, which took into consideration the principles of the Responsible Care initiative, originally signed in 1993.
The key objective of the updated Policy is the establishment of environmentally sound foundations upon which to continue the company’s further development, competitiveness and long-term projection.
With this aim, and the active participation of all of its staff members,
MAXAM has established specific objectives and targets concerning its environmentally significant aspects, as well as an internal standard applicable to all of its operations around the world.
ISO 14.001
To guarantee the observance of the Environmental Policy,
MAXAM has established an Environmental Management System (EMS) that complies with international standard ISO 14.001, with the ultimate aim to implement it in all of
MAXAM’s industrial working places.
The EMS is composed of both internal and external audits, and it also settles the basis for the control and minimization of waste, water discharges and emissions according with the 3R principle (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.)
The EMS provides tools to measure the environmental performance of the company through key performance indicators and aids in reporting and monitoring any incidents that might arise.
Sustainable development in action
MAXAM’s Chairman & CEO, José F. Sánchez-Junco, explains that “…Our commitment to the environment is not limited to the observance of relevant laws, but rather strives to go beyond the norm, particularly in matters related to innovation in sustainable development…”.
Significant examples of this proactive attitude are seen at the company’s Páramo de Masa (Burgos, Spain) installations, where
MAXAM is at the innovative forefront of renewable energy generation, the ecological restoration of surrounding soils –which has allowed for the reforestation of the local landscape with 1,5 million trees–, the development of wetland areas, and the protection of native fauna in an industrial context.
MAXAM counts on its workforce to strive for the very best in sustainable development, with all of its employees collaborating in this effort, regardless of the country in which they work or the position in which they serve. At MAXAM, environmental protection is not only an obligation, but also a personal commitment undertaken by each one of the company’s employee’s around the globe.
