Press room - News - A lead pelet guaranteed for MAXAM Outdoors
Evervalue manages batteries recycling process with most advanced procedures to obtain lead pellets used to manufacture hunting and sports cartridges.
In the year 2005 the Evervalue Project was born with the aim of guaranteeing the supply of lead pellets to MAXAM Outdoors. Car batteries became the element from which to get the lead needed to produce this product.
As Alejandro Llorente, Outdoors’ CFO and responsible for MAXAM Outdoors Recycling (MOR) activities’ diversification says: “The origin of this project is based on the search for a vertical integration in our basic raw materials, forced upon us by the volatile metal prices since the end of 2003, as the consequence of the raw materials boom caused by the BRIC’s (emerging countries) growth. Right from the beginning, we initiate this activity as an aim that goes further than simply complying with the environmental law, using the most advanced waste treatment procedures that exist today”.
Recycling process
According to MAXAM Outdoors’ CFO, “batteries are managed under the most advanced technologies available today”. At first, the batteries, stocked in authorised containers, are taken to the treating plants. Today, “we have five plants in
which the batteries’ components are taken apart correctly in order to reuse most of them. All this is done under strict controls with which to minimize the processes’ environmental impact”.
Once the lead has been extracted, and by a “rain”procedure, the pellet is appropriately classified, according to the company’s quality requirements. Later on, these pellets are used to manufacture hunting and sports cartridges in the factories that MAXAM has in Iruña de Oca (Álava, Spain), La Caparrella (Lleida, Spain), Birmingham (UK) and
Tennessee (USA).
The project´s facilities
First of all, there are intermediate warehouses where the batteries are transported to until reachingthe treatment plant. “At these plants we find equipment fo components fragmentation and separation in a watery environment, with its corresponding water and acid treatment”, the person responsible for MOR’s activities’ diversification comments. Plastic, separated by decantation, is recovered and stocked up to be sold. The metallic components are melted in rotational ovens to obtain lead. Later on, this lead is corrected in refine boilers to thin out the mixture that will later become a pellet of different diameters.
For Alejandro Llorente, the project’s progress has two key aspects:
- On one hand, geographic expansion. Evervalue was born in Spain and later expanded to Portugal, the UK, and recently, the United States.
- On the other hand, a complete service from the environmental and service management vocation to the waste producer, increasing the number of residues managed to all those generated by the automobile activity.
With this project, we calculate that on average a total of 6000 tonnes of waste materials will be treated this year. “
With this outlook we hope the Evervalue project becomes an important pillar of MAXAM Outdoors diversification process and a real example of sustainable economy”, Alejandro Llorente concludes.
The companies that operate under the Evervalue brand are Euskobat, Sogebat, Eley Recycling andEvervalue USA. With time, we aim for all them to change their name to Evervalue (Spain, USA, UK, Portugal…).
