MAXAM promotes measures and actions destined to conserve and improve the natural landscapes, from the own facilities of the company.

In MAXAM our commitment to respect the environment starts in our own factories. With a low edification density, MAXAM promotes measures and actions destined to conserve and improve the natural landscapes where the company is located. The factories of El Gordo (Cáceres), Galdácano (Biscay), Páramo de Masa (Burgos) in Spain, Ashford and Hernshaw (West Virginia), are a clear example of our responsibility to conserve and take care of the natural habitat.

Nature in the surroundings of these facilities is noted for its extension and landscapes, where various representative species of the local flora and fauna live. Very well conserved meadows thanks to the application of systems and actions, adapted to the current times, are carried out by MAXAM to conserve the environment as part of its commitment to ontribute to society’s progress and sustainable development.

Facilities
At the El Gordo factory, where the meadow’s area reaches 290.000 m2, holm oaks, chaparrals, mimosas and black poplars dominate the landscape. Today, as a way of conserving the environment, a regulated and registered aintenance plan of the facilities is carried out that involves measures such as regular controlled and authorized pruning, cutting down of diseased trees or improvements in those facilities that could be potentially contaminant.

In Galdácano, various species of lush trees (acacia, ash tree, oak, maple, plantain, birch trees and mimosas) dominate the factory’s natural landscape that covers a total area of 387 hectares. Some cedar, chestnut trees are found in the garden, and a few fruit trees such as fig or cherry. The most common shrub in the area is the salix and holly can also be found. The forest works are carried out to achieve three objectives: safety against fires; reforestation; and conserving and improving the forests ecological and landscape’s value.

Today, the specific actions carried out in the factory, to achieve the previous goals are: removing the thicket and weeds from the road sides, paths, buildings and perimeter fences; reaping the grass in all fire lines; reaping in gardens; maintenance of trees covered areas; and picking up of leaves.

In Páramo de Masa, the typical landscape of the area is constantly repeated inside the factory. The forest’s extension inside the factory has 990 hectares of forest land; 200 hectares fruit of the Edaphological Project; 300 hectares of pine trees (wild pines and laricius pines from reforestation processes made 30 years ago) and 90 hectares of oak trees when it comes to the established forest. The rest of the land is made up of shrub land, oaktrees and holm oaks and bush land. Today, as part of the conservation systems developed, MAXAM continues with the improvement works of the edaphic system in the lands belonging to the estate that began in 2002 as part of the ooperation Agreement with the Castilla y León Government. Also, it promotes actions destined to look after the biodiversity; hunting is forbidden inside the property; surveillance and control measures of the phitosanitary status and forest plagues; fertirrigation actions with drip irrigation; and works to keep the forest clean. Regarding the factories natural surroundings, we would highlight the creation of a wetland near the Ubierna River’s source and the preparation of a 70 hectares area to recuperate the Losine horse.

Finally, the Ashford and Hernshaw factories are model facilities when it comes to treating its environmental surroundings. In Virginia, 76% of the land is covered with woodlands. According to West Virginia’s department of flora, there are 35 species of trees catalogued. At these facilities located in a very special habitat, MAXAM North America promotes measures to preserve it, avoiding raw materials or final products migration to the ground, water or air, recycling as much as possible and always searching for new ways to further reduce the environmental impact.
