MAXAM´s new electronic detonator.

RIOTRONIC DT has been designed by MAXAM in line with its policy of developing products and services that respond to the changing needs of society and of introducing innovations to satisfy its customers’ needs. RIOTRONIC DT is the latest generation of electronic detonators, which allows the user to simply load and program a blast, providing precision and control, while reducing vibrations that may affect nearby structures to a minimum. The product complies with the most demanding quality and safety standards and offers highly attractive features that potentially reduce operating costs. 

RIOTRONIC DT includes resistant and user-friendly hardware, software, blasting boxes and control units. Leonard Smith, Head of Marketing of MAXAM Civil Explosives, explained that the key value of this product is its design and functionality. “It is a superior design that guarantees reliable programming and functionality, and thus ensures that blasts are safely and precisely executed,” he said. The advantages offered vary according to the type of mining operation and each user's specific requirements.

In open-pit operations, the system allows for large blasts with numerous boreholes, as well as the possibility of remote initiation. These features mean that the blast can be sequenced and thus increases the likehood of achieving desired rock movement and fragmentation. In the case of quarries, the RIOTRONIC DT system can provide better vibration control and improved fragmentation. In most cases, these are the results required by users of this kind of electronic detonators. The initiation system provides similar advantages in construction projects.

 


Proper training

During recent years, the electronic initiation systems that have come onto the market have generated a great deal of interests. However, their success depends to a large extent on users receiving the appropriate training. They have to learn about the interdependencies of the elements of the blast (rocktype, explosives, initiation systems, measuring equipment...), and how the electronic detonators and software can be incorporated within the blast plan to achieve the desired blast result.

That is why the training courses are very important; not only to ensure compliance with the safety processes, but so that the user understands the versatility of this system as a "tool" for improving the blast results. For more than two years, MAXAM has been developing parallel training plans in different countries for the gradual implementation of RIOTRONIC DT. There are courses and workshops on the proper use of this new electronic detonator for a variety of mining operations, quarries and construction projects. MAXAM is actively using RIOTRONIC DT blasting system around the globe in Europe, Scandinavia, South America and Africa, in extreme conditions ranging from -20ºC to +50ºC.

The efficiency of this new electronic initiation system, combined with the expert knowledge of  MAXAM technicians in its implementation, as well as the positive feedback from customers, all go towards ensuring the success of RIOTRONIC DT.
