MAXAM broadens its Corporate Social Responsibility activities in Ghana

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility activities in Ghana, MAXAM has donated a cheque for GH₵30,000 (7,000€) to the National Cardiothoracic Center of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Last year, this center practiced over 400 operations of various degrees, with almost half of those being open-heart surgeries - mostly done on children whose parents cannot afford the cost.

At the presentation event, Dr. Lawrence Serebour, Head of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, said the donation “will go a long way to save lives and improve the life-expectancy of many Ghanaians who will be treated at the cardio unit”.

Jose Fernando Sanchez-Junco, MAXAM’s Chairman and CEO explained that “MAXAM has proved its commitment to support the Ghanaian community on many occasions and in diverse ways. Over the 23 years of doing business in Ghana, MAXAM has demonstrated various actions that show how the company is critical about its social responsibility to the community.”

MAXAM Corporate Social Responsibility Policy

MAXAM believes in a higher standard and going beyond the obligations established by legal precepts in order to always work in a manner that is respectful with the environment and helps local communities flourish and develop. Leading companies must be active members of the societies to which they belong. By always being mindful of these matters, the goal is to guarantee both MAXAM’s individual growth, as well as that of the society where it operates.

MAXAM in Ghana

MAXAM has been present in Ghana since the early 1990’s. In 1994 MAXAM Ghana Limited was established as the local subsidiary of MAXAM Civil Explosives in this key country for the mining industry. Nowadays, MAXAM employs more than 180 people in this country and coordinates all the West Africa operations from its headquarters in Accra.

MAXAM plays a crucial role in the Ghanaian gold extraction industry by being the sole supplier of sustainable blasting solution of the Adamus, Chirano and Iduapriem gold mines managed by Endeavour, Kinross and Anglogold Ashanti, respectively. Mounting 5.496 million ounces of gold mineral reserves, these three mines are of fundamental importance to the Ghanaian economy, with an annual production rate of 572.000 ounces, they represent one of Ghana’s key economic cornerstones.

MAXAM is also present in the Awaso bauxite mine managed by Ghana Bauxite Company and Tarkwa’s manganese mine owned by Ghana Manganese Company. Both projects have more than 20 years life expectancy and are key elements for the wellbeing and prosperity of local areas.
